While many radio stations are playing Whitney Houston on heavy rotation today, media outlets are earning the bragging rights for breaking one of the biggest entertainment stories of 2012 so far. As it turns out, one lone tweet reported the death of Whitney Houston nearly 45 minutes before any news outlet.
The tragic news of spread like wildfire on Twitter. More than 2.5 million tweets occurred within the first hour of the Associated Press tweet, which was sent at 4:57pm PT. The action on Twitter peaked at 5:23pm PT with more than 61,000 tweets sent in that minute. Reaction of Houston’s death from celebrities also became popular retweets, and another way for users to share the news.
